This twitpic from ThinkProgress claims that there were 362 record highs recorded in the US last year, and 0 record lows. That seems almost impossible, right? Even a very, very biased coin is going to come up tails at least once in 362 trials with near certainty.

Over the last few days, due to very high temperatures, the staff of the zoo has provided animals with extra portions of frozen fruit to help them fight the heat.
An interesting calculation, claiming to show that Saturday, January 16th, 2010 was the warmest day on Earth since satellites starting measuring temperatures, and (I'm extrapolating) possibly the warmest day in millenia.
If I look back 100 years to 1909, and go over the events Wikipedia notes as significant, there is only one that I was more than remotely aware of: Perry (almost) making it to the North Pole (and I didn't know for sure that it happened in 1909). And one that seemed to have real historical significance even though at the time it probably seemed minor
